Reports To: Head of School
The part-time Director of Development oversees Westland’s fundraising and community building efforts and events for current community members, alumni, and the extended community that are aligned with Westland School’s culture of philanthropy.
The part-time Director of Development works to embody the principles of progressive education, democracy, and Westland’s mission. The part-time Director of Development works to ensure that every element of school life reflects the principles of equity, justice, and inclusivity on the personal, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural levels. Westland has a “pitch-in and help” culture which invites all members of the administrative team to help whenever needed. The role requires a relationship builder who is highly organized and values and understands small independent schools.
Responsibilities
Oversees all aspects of the development program, including fundraising, leading the annual giving program, guiding the capital campaign, soliciting corporate and foundation proposals, creating a strong alumni association, and managing special development events.
Identifies, researches, and spearheads the implementation of a diverse and multifaceted fundraising program to support the School’s strategic vision, cultivating a culture of giving and gratitude across all constituencies and socio-economic strata.
Collaborates closely with the Board Committee on Development Chair and the Head of School to establish strategies for initiating and meeting future fundraising goals.
Collaborates with the Head of School and Director of Finance to project future fundraising needs and goals.
Serves as lead for all development communication and serves as primary contact to current families, alumni, and extended community members.
Works to increase, enrich, cultivate, and steward the donor base.
Nurtures and maintains a highly collaborative relationship with the Head of School, the Board Chair, and individual board members, supporting them in all their fundraising responsibilities, and accompanying them on donor visits when appropriate.
Manages and maintains a database of all contributors and provides development reports as required.
Parent CommitteesServes as an administrative liaison to several development-related parent/guardian committees.
Works with the administrative team to determine composition of parent/guardian committees.
Works with the Alumni Engagement Committee to create, manage, and maintain the Alumni database.
Develops strategies for growing the engagement of Alumni and extended community.
Offers management and oversight to all volunteer efforts in support of the School’s development and fundraising program.

Salary InformationThe salary range for this position is $40,000-55,000 depending on qualifications and experience. The compensation package will be competitive and commensurate with experience and education.

Hiring Process
When openings occur at Westland, a search is begun for candidates with a progressive background, an investment in equity and inclusivity, and experience. A faculty and administrative interview committee meets with select candidates, and finalists for head teaching positions are invited to teach a demonstration lesson.
